That being said, the G5 obviously still can handle Photoshop very well. The bottom end Mac Pro is 238% faster in overall performance, and goodness knows how much faster with Photoshop. For Photoshop specifically, it will be much faster than that, due to having faster memory and especially because it will be utilizing the GPU. Your G5's overall performance is 2100, whereas the bottom-end Mac Mini (2.26ghz) is 3229, over 50% faster in overall performance. And you don't need to spend $2500 on a Mac Pro, the cheapest Mac Mini would be substantially faster, and run the current operating system.
Photoshop cs4 for mac upgrade#
I'm not sure that was the best move, as the CS4 upgrade will likely drop substantially in price with the release of CS5. Im running CS now and just trying to get a little info before plunking down $800 for the upgrade. Im considering upgrading my CS suite to CS4 but some have said CS4 runs very slow. Im looking for some input on how this program runs on a Mac G5. Of course, an iMac or a Mac Pro would be more powerful, but also more expensive. CS4 uses your GPU to speed up processing. The $599 Mac mini would be a massive speed upgrade for you, and can also run dual displays (assuming you are working with a dual display setup now). At any rate, if you are using CS1, I imagine it will run much better. I have Photoshop Extended CS4 now, but I'm running it on a MacBook Pro, so I can't comment on your specific case.
I know that is easier said than done, but, it has to be mentioned.ĬS2 ran much better on my iBook G4 than CS1 did (CS1 was AWFUL). CS4 is going to be replaced shortly by CS5 (which will not support PPC). Pardon me for stating the obvious, but it's time to upgrade the computer.
